The Snow Must Go On !

I would like to say a huge thanks everyone who made the first Sunbury Antiques of 2010 a memorable one & one which will certainly go down in history!

Obviously due to the current & unpredictable weather the UK is currently experiencing and what started last week with talk of armageddon like conditions hitting the South East & Greater London we were all slightly concerned, to say the least that this could be the first Sunbury Antiques ever in over 30 years that we may have had to contemplate cancelling. Sunbury Antiques has survived Foot & Mouth, petrol strikes, adverse weather, worldwide credit crunch’s but with the whole of the UK being swathed in a blanket of snow & ice last week, which lead to Airports, Motorways, Schools & Major Sporting Events all closing, operating such a huge event as ours was going to be a challenge! Kempton Park & it’s staff have been celebrating and working flat out during this current & hugely successful Jump Season with the historic King George meeting on Boxing Day. They estimated more than 20’000 people attended the meeting. After meetings with the Clerk Of The Course at Kempton the week previous and hearing assurances from herself and all at Kempton that the racecourse would be ready it was full steam ahead & business as usual for the first Antiques Market of 2010. I visited the racecourse every day building up to the antiques market and witnessed a herculean effort, tractors with snow ploughs, giant brush’s which they use for clearing the all weather track, gritters and over 20 staff all with shovels & brooms clearing the site for the antiques market. With temperatures overnight hovering around -4 it was a bone chilling start. Due to the conditions Kempton turned on the floodlights which they use for evening racing for the first couple of hours of trading which was greatly appreciated by all, giving a wintery but quite magic feel to the place. One of the outside stall holders thought he had overslept after waking in his van only to see that it was light outside! After speaking with many of our stall holders some standing at Sunbury Antiques for their first time commented on how well they done but also how impressed they were with the site due to current weather which we all have experienced. Obviously I would like to say a huge thanks to all our stall holders and buyers who battled & braved the elements to attend. Also to Kempton Park & Sunbury Antiques staff and everyone who made the first Sunbury Antiques of 2010 a memorable one and one which will certainly go down in history. Thank You Edward Cruttenden
